Makeover Project #6: bedroom vanity unit

The sink in the second bedroom is most commonly used by guests when staying. It is perhaps a little old-fashioned having a sink in a bedroom, but it is useful. As the plumbing is in place, why not replace it with something slightly more elegant?

Problem

  • Dated appearance
  • Corner design occupies a lot of space
  • Shaver light above is not required
  • No storage
Before sink

Before Makeover: Dated vanity sink

Solution

  • Replace sink with counter-top sink and pillar tap
  • Sit sink onto re-purposed, repainted chest of drawers (previously a 1950s utility dressing table with mirror, which had been made over once before)
  • Holes and access holes for plumbing cut into back and top
  • Shaver socket electrics covered with blanking plate
  • Mirror positioned over blanking plate (LED mirror is battery operated)
Sink on chest of drawers

After Makeover: counter-top sink and pillar tap on a chest of drawers.

Project Cost = £129: Sink £50 (ex-sample bought some years ago), Plumbing £20, Paint £12, Tap £30 (eBay), Chest of Drawers (free from a house clearance), Mirror £17 (DIY store closing down sale)
